Cataract surgery entails the removal of the cloudy lens from the eye, which is then replaced with an artificial lens implant. Over time, some patients may experience clouding of the capsule that houses the new lens. This clouding can interfere with vision and gradually cause blurriness. In such cases, a YAG laser capsulotomy may be recommended to create an opening in the capsule, thereby restoring clear vision.
This laser treatment is painless, safe, and highly effective, often providing almost immediate results.
During the procedure, you will rest your chin and forehead on the laser machine. A single drop of anaesthetic eye drop will be applied to your eye, and a special contact lens may be placed on it. While the laser treatment is ongoing, you might hear a few clicking sounds and see flashes of light.
The procedure takes place in an outpatient clinic and does not involve any surgical cuts to the eye. Instead, the laser creates an opening in the opaque capsule.
The procedure only takes a few minutes to complete, and there is no need for aftercare. While it is generally safe, there is a very small risk of retinal detachment. You will be advised to contact us if you experience frequent flashing lights, notice new floaters, or see a veil or shadow at the edge of your vision.
The cost includes the surgeon’s fees, hospital charges and post-operative follow-up for up to six months.
On the day of the YAG laser capsulotomy procedure, you will be taken into a laser room and sat at a machine with a chin and headrest that has a laser attached. The doctor will put anaesthetic drops in your eye to numb it and to dilate the pupil before the procedure begins.
The eye specialist will put a special mirrored lens on your eye before applying the laser beam, which allows them to see the membrane clearly. They will then apply the laser and make a small hole in it to clear the vision. You will hear a clicking sound and see a flashing light during the treatment. The procedure takes about 3-5 minutes and it isn’t painful.
Vision will be blurred for a few hours following the YAG laser capsulotomy treatment because of the eye drops, which were used to dilate the pupils.
Your doctor may prescribe eye drops or tablets to use for a short while in order to protect the eye against any short term increase in eye pressure.
